Closing of MGI Beijing Office
Written by: Caroline Pinkney
It is with heavy hearts that Mitsui & Co. Global Investment, Inc. (MGI) announces the closure of our our office in Beijing. Established 17 years ago, this office worked on identifying start-ups using cutting-edge innovation that would improve human quality of life and also contribute to the local community. Our team members in China tirelessly interfaced with start-ups, investors and industry professionals at the forefront of innovation in China across a variety of industries including drug development, consumer goods, video, automotive technology and more.
Throughout the history of the Beijing office, cherished members have contributed their time, some moving on to other endeavors and others staying on until the final days. Altogether, MGI invested in 21 companies based in China which brought improved solutions to the retail, communications, automotive and biotechnology sectors – companies like Six Rooms, an online video community, and Leyou, a must visit retail store for expecting and postpartum moms.
We are so proud of each member that was a part of Beijing office, for their hard work and dedication, their contribution to building our portfolio as well as their willingness to enlighten us on the local venture environment in China. MGI will certainly not be as well versed or well equipped in global venture without them. We would like to especially thank Susie Shen and Kayla He, the last two remaining members of the Beijing office, who stayed on diligently making sure every loose end was tied before closing.
MGI has decided to shut down its Chinese operations and realign its future strategy to focus on its operations in the US and Japan. Even so, we hope that one day in the future we may be able to revive our Beijing office and bring a new day to our story in China.
